NEYSO Special Teams is a program that was started in 1987 by Ray Lange. This program was designed to give handicapped
athletes a chance to play in a sport that they may not have a chance to play due to their disability. We have had over 300
athletes play in our program since the beginning. Right now we have athletes that range from ages 4 to 55. We allow every
athlete to play no matter what their disability.
Our program consists of a Spring season which generally starts in the middle of March ending the middle of May, and a Fall
season which starts the middle of September ending the Middle of November. In between the two seasons our athletes
participate in the Special Olympics Area and State games. We play on the Lower Bee tree fields at McAllister Park. Our games
will be on Saturday's at 3:00pm and practice will be on Tuesday's at 6:00pm.
We are not all work and no play. We teach our players how to have fun and that shows during our season and most of all at
our end of the season parties.
Our soccer program has an exceptional coaching staff. All of our coaches have been certified by Special Olympics. Most of our
coaches do not have relatives with special needs but, they love teaching and being around our "Special" athletes. We teach
them the basics of the sport and most of all we allow them to have fun. We not only teach our Athletes how to play soccer, we
teach them to work as a team. Something that they are not always taught.
I also want to say that none of this would be possible without our dedicated Support group, our parents. None of this would be
possible with out them bringing their children out for us to teach, play with and most of all learn as much from them as they learn
from us.
